There is ample evidence that humans need touch in order to thrive, but the field of psychology holds touch as taboo in clinical practice. What does the law say about touch and how can clinicians ethically incorporate it for the client’s benefit?

Using a combination of lecture, video and experiential exercises, learn about the ethical use of touch, including clinical implications, discussing touch with your client and gaining consent, exploring your own history of touch as well as dynamics of race and culture at play in the therapist/client relationship.

Appropriate for all mental health professionals whether new to touch or trained in therapeutic touch methods.

About the Instructor:

Brandy Vanderheiden, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT49771)is a JFKU graduate who began her training in Somatic Experiencing in 2008. In 2011, she studied with therapeutic touch pioneers to combine touch and psychotherapy for support of early trauma and attachment repair. Her private practice is primarily touch focused.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Name the professional, legal and ethical issues related to using touch in psychotherapy.
  2. Articulate clear clinical benefits for touch.
  3. Explain the purpose of touch interventions in commonly understood clinical terms for treatment planning and discussing with colleagues, insurance companies, etc.
  4. Assess client appropriateness and contraindications for touch.
